SB Chevy Camshaft Drive, Wet Belt, Installation Instructions
Plain Cover

1. Check that you have all the correct parts. Be sure the crank sprocket fits on the crank snout and the seal is the correct size.

2. Install the cover base on the front of the block with the crankshaft installed. Be sure the cover fits flat against the gasket surface. Be sure the ten 1/4-20 x 7/8" long screws do not bottom out in the threads of the block.

3. Remove the cam sprocket from the cam hub. Install the cam hub on your camshaft. Be sure the bolts do not bottom out in the threads of the cam.

4. Stick the 2.125 ID thrust bearing to the back of the cam hub with the black side toward the cam hub and install the cam in the block.

5. Install the crank sprocket on the crankshaft. Be sure chamfer on bore goes toward shoulder. All crank sprockets should be pushed on with an installer. Aluminum crank sprockets can be warmed in an oven to 250 degrees F maximum before installing.

6. Set the crank to TDC on #1 cylinder. Set the cam at TDC on the overlap. (Intake and exhaust lifters on #1 cylinder the same height.) The dowel pin in the cam should be at 3 o'clock.

7. With the belt wrapped around both sprockets, install the cam sprocket. The timing dots on the cam and the crank sprockets should line up. Put a little lube on the bolts and washers that hold the cam sprocket to the hub. Be sure the chamfer on the ID of the washer goes toward the head of the bolt. Torque bolts to 30 ft-lbs, maximum..

Timing Dot Alignment
8. Check your cam timing as you normally would. The slots in the cam sprocket allow plus or minus 10 degrees of adjustment. Each mark is 1 degree.

9. Install the front cam thrust button on the cam hub using the three 1/4-28 x 1/2" flat head bolts.

10. Stick the front thrust bearing (with a .031 thick hardened washer on either side) to the button with a little grease.

11. Install the front cover and tighten all bolts. Check the cams endplay with a dial indicator. Remove the cover and select the proper shims to make the endplay zero. Stick the shims to the button side of the thrust bearing assembly. DO NOT put the shims against the rollers of the thrust bearing. Re-install the cover.

12. If you have a dry sump oiling system, you may want to install a -3 line from the port in the bottom of the cover base to a scavenge port in the pump. This will keep oil from puddling in the cover on deceleration.

13. The water pump may require modification or spacers to clear the cover. Be sure to check the water pump drive belt alignment, if you space out the water pump.
